DEAF CULTURE SAMPLE
Deaf Theatre
Deaf theatre evolved from small community performances into a recognized art form that increasingly centers Deaf culture and signed language. Landmark groups like the National Theatre of the Deaf and Deaf West expanded opportunities for Deaf actors, though both faced challenges around funding and accessibility. More recent works, such as the fully Deaf-led musical The Black Drum, highlight a shift toward authentic storytelling created by and for Deaf people. As Deaf theatre grows, true accessibility, cultural integrity, and sustained financial support remain key to its future.
ASL HUMANITIES SAMPLE
Deaf Children
Deaf children thrive when they have early and consistent access to a full, natural language, and American Sign Language (ASL) provides exactly that. Research shows that more than 90% of Deaf children are born to hearing parents, many of whom are unfamiliar with signed languages at first. Early exposure to ASL supports healthy cognitive, social, and emotional development, giving children a strong foundation for learning. Ensuring Deaf children have access to ASL is essential to their ability to connect, communicate, and fully participate in the world around them.

William C. Stokoe
William C. Stokoe was an American linguist and a long-time professor at Gallaudet University. His research on American Sign Language revolutionized the understanding of ASL in the United States and sign languages throughout the world.
Read my reflection paper on a chapter that shook me to my core. A moment where realization settled and I got to experience how truly impactful his resistance and perseverance was in the name of ASL.

#DeafTok Research
Myself alongside Dr. Hoffman, formulated a research which examines how Deaf and Hard of Hearing creators on #DeafTok TikTok experience censorship and shadowbanning. Survey results and online discussions show frequent drops in engagement, video removals, captioning errors, and algorithmic misunderstandings of sign language. Overall, the study suggests social media platforms unintentionally disadvantage Deaf creators and need better accessibility and moderation practices.
